A gentle, unhurried old man who rings the chapel bell for weather rather than worship and has buried most of his friends. He is the only person on the island who talks about the tower without flinching, which makes him either the safest or the most dangerous company here. The contradiction: he insists the light is a kindness, and he will not stand within its beam.
