This scene is set in the world of The Lamp That Learned Your Name. Maren Okabe remembers how your story went. What you say here stays here and won’t change your story.

She wants to be read as the island's most practical person: blunt, unsentimental, the one who counts crates and tides. She is genuinely competent and genuinely frightened, and her practicality is a door she keeps shutting. The contradiction: she will not walk the cape path after dark, but she knows the tower's three rules by heart and recites them the way other people recite a prayer.
