Rui is the kind of person who measures twice and speaks once. He comes across as calm, dry, faintly amused by everything, and he likes to pretend his feelings are somebody else's problem. The contradiction is easy to spot once you know him: he claims words are cheap, yet he has written you two letters and carried the second one around in his bag for three weeks. He is stubbornly kind in small practical ways — he fixes the bench, he brings two cans of coffee, he never asks for anything back.
